How Does an EMI Calculator Work?

An EMI (equated monthly instalment) calculator splits the amount you finance into equal monthly payments that include both repayment and interest. This calculator uses the standard reducing-balance method, where interest each month is charged only on the balance you still owe.

Product price
The listed price of the item you plan to buy. It is the starting point for every other figure.
Down payment
The amount you pay upfront. It is not financed and does not attract interest, so a larger down payment means a smaller loan.
Financed amount
The effective purchase price minus your down payment. This is the principal on which the EMI and interest are calculated.
Annual interest rate
The yearly rate charged by the lender, entered as a percentage. A rate of 0% means a no-interest EMI.
Monthly interest rate
The annual rate divided by 12 and then by 100. For example, 12% a year is 1% a month (0.01).
Loan tenure
The number of months over which you repay. Common shopping EMI tenures range from 3 to 60 months.
Monthly EMI
The fixed amount you pay every month during the tenure, covering part of the principal and part of the interest.
Total interest
The extra money you pay for financing: the total of all EMIs minus the financed amount.
Total amount paid
Your down payment plus every EMI you pay. It equals the effective purchase price plus the total interest.

The EMI formula

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)

Here P is the financed amount, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of months. When the interest rate is 0%, the calculator simply divides the financed amount by the number of months.

Calculate the Real Cost of an Online Purchase

The price shown on a product page is rarely the full story. What you actually spend depends on several things that can push the cost up or down.

  • Coupons that reduce the price at checkout
  • Cashback that is credited back after you pay
  • Bank or card offers that give an instant or delayed discount
  • Shipping or delivery charges on the order
  • Interest charged when you pay through EMI
  • Processing fees and other charges added by a lender

The Additional Shopping Costs section in the calculator lets you enter these amounts yourself to see a more realistic effective price. DealTrackerProBot does not fill them in for you from this calculator: every value comes from what you type.
